Corporate tax enquiries know-how

At Pure Tax, our Tax Investigations specialists make it their mission to keep up-to-date with all the latest statistics and investigative approaches being taken by HMRC, for the benefit of our clients. Even a routine HMRC enquiry can pile on the pressure for entrepreneurs and businesses; tax investigations dig deeper and often rattle clients.

Our team fully understand this and work hard to provide peace of mind for our clients, being the trusted ‘buffer’ between them and HMRC. Leading our Tax Investigations & Disputes practice is Amit Puri. Amit is a fully qualified former senior Inspector of Taxes with HMRC and has previously written several articles regarding HMRC’s investigations and disclosure facilities.

Here, Amit and Sagar Jain share their latest article for the Taxation magazine, titled “Probing Questions”, which looks at corporate tax enquiries, at high-level, carried out by HMRC’s Large Business directorate and Wealthy & Mid-sized Business Compliance directorate.

Background

“Whichever part of HMRC the comparatively larger business is the target of, these corporate enquiries are typically carried out by a team of officers. This calls for increased resources being required at the business’ end (i.e. more people and time resources and so costs too). These enquiries are not to be confused with regular compliance checks into personal tax returns or simpler corporation tax returns, which typically focus on a single tax year or accounting period, and sometimes just a handful of aspects. The larger business enquiries discussed in this article are those that significantly disrupt the owners’ lives and/or their finance team’s and/or their advisers’”
