Helping Advisers Like Accountants
Our approach to tax investigations, tax disclosures and other disputes is to firstly listen to our clients and their regular trusted advisers. Helping advisers in their businesses is the backbone of our business, because we know they have built up long-running relationships with their clients and have helped them grow. Most of our referrals come from other advisers – like accountants, who recognise that we don’t provide regular tax compliance services and therefore we are NOT going to keep their clients for ourselves.
We appreciate that accountants deal with tax compliance obligations in the main for their many clients and routine tax advice as necessary, however, most of them have little or no experience of dealing with HMRC investigations let alone contentious matters and those which reach an unexpected impasse.
Our team explores the immediate and wider issues facing the adviser’s client before providing a clear and precise solution, drawing on Pure Tax Investigations’ extensive HMRC experience and tax expertise. We ensure that clients’ affairs are handled in a commercial and tax efficient manner, and within the spirit of the UK tax legislation. The UK tax climate is constantly changing as we have witnessed through successive Budgets and other fiscal events, and so HMRC’s pursuit of our partnering advisers’ clients becomes more in-depth and intrusive all the time.
See our 5* Google Reviews, which are most of our clients’ testimonials – despite our specialist area of tax disputes work being so private and discreet! Our helping advisers is clear to see there too.
We provide tailored and discreet tax advice, having particular regard for the specific nature and circumstances of our clients. It goes without say that we ensure a collaborative approach with the existing advisers and will always spend the necessary time to understand their clients’ backgrounds, situations and future aspirations as part of the specialist tax disputes work we do, helping advisers.
We know it is easy for others to make mistakes when trying to deal with HMRC, but which can sometimes have long-running and costly consequences for their clients. Sometimes, tax adjustments have not even been identified and there are no tax risks, but other advisers may have freely shared information (requested by and) to HMRC. This is not reasonable, because the information should at least have been sampled for tax risks, which should then be managed pro-actively, rather that hoping HMRC don’t ask more questions (which they typically do); and then go on a fishing expedition.
We use our HMRC experience and know-how to manage overly wide ranging requests for information and reducing their scope, as well as finding tax problems before HMRC does. This ensures our control and influence over the enquiry process, and is the only way to successfully manage the process towards an agreed and negotiated conclusion.
Many tax investigations, particularly the more serious cases where HMRC suspects tax fraud / evasion, are comparatively more in-depth and intrusive. Naturally, these are even more time-consuming, so adequate resources are required to meet the needs of such investigations. It follows that most regular advisers e.g. accountants in practice, do not have those resources because they have more than enough tax compliance work to manage. Resourcing is important in HMRC investigations work.
It is these aspects of our approach that our clients and their regular advisers find invaluable. Having their discreet affairs managed by an Ex-HMRC tax professional and a proactive tax disputes team offers our clients and is helping advisers secure considerable peace of mind, that their interests are in safe hands and that we understand them in practice.
Our specialist team has significant experience inside and outside of HMRC, bringing that specialist tax investigations and tax disclosures knowledge and know-how to the fore. As well as understanding HMRC’s informal and formal information gathering, risk assessments and differing enquiry approaches. This has kept us in a uniquely fortunate position, to confidently and expertly explain e.g. HMRC’s rationale for investigating and gauging the length of time an enquiry / compliance check might take, as well as anticipating how aggressive the caseworker might become.
Usually, we represent clients directly with HMRC, however, that is not the only way we work with them and their regular advisers. It is not mandatory to make our involvement known to HMRC. As per the client’s and/or adviser’s preference, we can provide strategic advice in the background, draft letters of response to HMRC and/or feed into them, identify and collate documents/evidence for our careful use, and anything that works in practice for all the parties – especially helping advisers.
